Even though President Biden was the one who signed the law that says TikTok’s Chinese owner (ByteDance) must sell the app or face a ban in the U.S., it’s actually Donald Trump as the current president who now has to make that deal happen.
There’s a deadline: September 17th. If a deal doesn’t happen by then, TikTok could be banned in the U.S.
Even though Trump hasn’t finalized any deal to save TikTok from being banned, his own White House just created an official TikTok account (@WhiteHouse) and posted its first video celebrating Trump’s achievements. 😅
Also, Trump and his campaign are using TikTok heavily:
Back in 2020, Trump tried to ban TikTok, claiming it was a national security threat. But once he realized how many supporters he had on the app, he changed his mind. In 2024, his campaign launched a TikTok account (@TeamTrump) that went viral and got billions of views even more than Kamala Harris’s campaign.
Trump delayed the TikTok ban several times in 2024. He seems to like the app now because it gives him a lot of publicity and viral moments. Even though the government is threatening to shut down TikTok, the Trump administration is using it for political gain.
Trump basically said: “Why would I get rid of TikTok?” especially since it’s helping him reach millions of people.
